The place the USA holds among modern nations in the production and use of
musical instruments is so significant that the fact alone ought to be
sufficient to disprove the charge that Americans are too material to
appreciate music or the arts. In this book we purpose to treat of the
development of musical instruments and their manufacture in America from the
historical, technical, and industrial standpoints, with brief sketches of the
various improvements and of the individuals identified with them.
"John Broadwood, the founder of Broadwood & Sons, a young Scotchman, came to
London in 1751, and found employment in Tschudi's workshop... Broadwood, by
his personal genius as an inventor and workman, rescued Tschudi from being a
mere harpsichord-maker, and, toward 1786, Tschudi & Broadwood became pre-
eminently known as piano-forte makers. Broadwood was instrumental in
introducing the action at present known as the "English grand action," which
originated with Backers, a workman in Tschudi's shop, in 1776..."
