Quelle est l'origine du schisme anglican, ce bouleversement qui sépara au XVIe siècle l'Église anglaise de l'Église romaine ? Faut-il y voir l'aboutissement inéluctable de la vague de réformation qui submergea l'Europe du Nord sous l'impulsion de Luther et de Calvin ? Ou ce schisme ne tiendrait-il pas plutôt de la personnalité même du roi Henri VIII qui, semble-t-il, serait allé jusqu'à rompre avec Rome davantage pour des affaires sentimentales que pour des questions d'ordre théologique ? Car c'est bien d'un schisme qu'il s'agit et non, du moins au départ, d'une réelle volonté de réforme. En 1521, en effet, le pape Léon X avait décerné à Henri VIII le titre de " Defensor Fidei " pour s'être opposé à Luther à propos des sacrements. Ce n'est que quelques années plus tard qu'Henri VIII se lance en campagne contre Rome pour obtenir l'annulation de son premier mariage avec Catherine d'Aragon, tante de Charles Quint, afin de pouvoir épouser Anne Boylen. -- What lies at the origin of the Anglican schism, the shattering events that, in the 16th century, separated the English Church from Rome?
