Paul Durand-Ruel et le post-impressionnisme

Le marchand d'art Paul Durand-Ruel a consacré sa vie à défendre les peintres de l'École de 1830 (Delacroix, Corot, Daubigny, Millet) puis les impressionnistes. On ignore généralement qu'il a apporté la même énergie à soutenir cinq peintres de la génération post-impressionniste, entrés dans son écurie au milieu des années 1890 : Henry Moret, Maxime Maufra, Gustave Loiseau, Georges d'Espagnat et Albert André.

L'exposition qui leur est consacré à la Propriété Caillebotte fait revivre ces peintres de grand talent.

Claire Durand-Ruel Snollaerts et Jacques-Sylvain Klein se sont attachés à étudier leurs oeuvres et à éclairer les liens qui les unissent. Ils ont dépouillé les archives de la maison Durand-Ruel - catalogues d'exposition, livres de stock, de comptabilité et remis en dépôt - et exploité la passionnante correspondance échangée avec leur marchand. Ils nous livrent ici un travail de première main, éclairant une période très riche de l'histoire de l'art.

The art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel championed the painters of the School of 1830 (Delacroix, Corot, Daubigny, Millet) and then the impressionists. But few today are aware that with just as much enthusiasm he supported five painters of the post-impressionist generation whom he began to represent in the middle of the 1890s: Henry Moret, Maxime Maufra, Gustave Loiseau, Georges d'Espagnat and Albert André.

With the present exhibition, the Caillebotte Property aims to bring new life to these talented painters.

Claire Durand-Ruel and Jacques-Sylvain Klein have striven to explore their works and bring to light the bonds that unite them. They have meticulously searched the archives of the Durand-Ruel gallery - exhibition catalogues, accounts of inventories, of finances and of deposits - and they have combed the fascinating correspondence exchanged between the dealer and the artists. Here they deliver a firts-rate work which illuminates a very rich period in the history of art.
